Factsheet 1: 8 Principles for Managing Mentors - A Program Check List

This factsheet provides practitioners with 8 simple prinicples to follow to adequately support mentors in order to retain a high quality pool of volunteers. Research by Grossman and Tierney has shown that mentors who are supported throughout the mentoring relationship by the program are retained for longer and their skill level improves dramatically, therefore providing a better quality of service to the young people they are supporting.

With a well prepared plan in place, your recruitment can become sustainable and highly regarded. Attracting the right volunteers to match with the young people in your program is a vital ingredient in the overall success of reaching both program and mentee goals.

Factsheet 4: Program Sustainability

This factsheet provides programs with tips on how to make their program more sustainable. Sustainably managed programs that provide a stable source of mentors over an extensive period of time best meet the needs of the young people they aim to help. Research demonstrates that quality mentoring relationships that last for twelve months or longer result in more sustained outcomes for mentees. To ensure your program has maximum opportunity to provide a service after your allocated grant period, sustainability planning must be tackled during the planning stages and considered a priority for ongoing action and development.

Factsheet 5: Managing Risk During the Match

This factsheet offers information regarding the process of managing risk to ensure your organisation is prepared when things go wrong. In meeting your program goals and providing a safe and secure environment for mentees and mentors it is imperative that risk is managed and understood as part of your program planning. Risk is concerned with the chance of something happening which will impact your program and organisations outcomes. Risk management is the process of limiting risk, managing potential risks and having policy and procedure in place so that if things do go wrong, damage is minimised.

Factsheet 6: Avoiding Early Match Termination

This factsheet provides coordinators with help to prevent matches terminating prematurely. Research demonstrates that the longer the mentoring relationship, the more positive outcomes for the mentee. However, if matches end in the first three months, a greater potential for harm exists. As program coordinators, it is imperative to plan, deliver and develop programs to provide the best outcomes for success; for matches to remain together for a reasonable amount of time; and in order to meet the vision for your program.
